Zhaga FAQ

Where does the name "Zhaga" come from and what is the meaning of it?

The Zhaga Consortium was launched in 2010. Zhaga has since then developed into a global brand. The word Zhaga is derived from a beautiful waterfall in Sichuan province, China.

What does Zhaga do?

Zhaga aims to standardize interfaces of components of LED luminaires, including LED light engines, LED modules, LED arrays, holders, electronic control gear (LED drivers), connectors and sensing/communication modules. Zhaga does not standardize components but the interface between components. This allows for interoperability of components but does not limit their performance and the further development of innovations.

What is a Zhaga book?

A Zhaga Book is an interface specification and defines the necessary conditions for interoperability. By assuring manufacturers that the components addressed in the Book actually fit and work together, they can focus their resources on differentiation and innovation.

The Zhaga Consortium offers its interface specifications to international standardization bodies such as the IEC. In January 2023 the Zhaga Book 7 on linear and square LED modules was the first Zhaga industry specification that became available as standard IEC 63356-2. Find out more.

What is the relationship between Zhaga and the DALI Alliance?

The Zhaga Consortium and the DALI Alliance collaborate on joint certification programs for interoperable luminaires and components, which enable intelligent, future-proof products and IoT connectivity. One result is the Zhaga-D4i certification logo. Find out more.

What are key value propositions provided by Zhaga?

Zhaga creates interface specifications for components of LED luminaires to enable multi-vendor eco-systems of interoperable products.

For LED luminaire manufacturers, this reduces supply-chain risks and bottlenecks.

Benefits for specifiers and end-users are that Zhaga-based luminaires are future-proof, that certified components can be purchased from multiple vendors and latest generation LED

technology can be adopted. Luminaires can be specified for future projects, knowing that a current, up-to-date LED light source can be fitted when the project is actually installed.

Zhaga builds trust in interoperability through a certification and logo licensing program executed by Authorized Testing Centers.

Durable, repairable and upgradeable LED luminaires are key elements contributing to sustainable lighting. Zhaga is developing and standardizing interface specifications for components of serviceable luminaires, to help facilitate a new market framework called “Circularity Lighting”.
